Performance of sealing rings in high temperature environments

Mar 05, 2025

The performance of sealing rings will be affected by many aspects in high temperature environments. Changes in material properties, changes in sealing performance, and specific material performance are introduced in detail.

Changes in material properties
Material aging: High temperature will accelerate the aging process of sealing ring materials, making them hard and brittle. After aging, the sealing ring loses its original elasticity and then loses its sealing performance, and cannot effectively prevent medium leakage.

Deformation: The sealing ring material will expand and deform under high temperature. This deformation may cause problems in the coordination between the sealing ring and the sealing part, which greatly reduces the sealing effect and cannot meet the sealing requirements.

Degradation of hardness: High temperature environment will reduce the hardness of the sealing ring, and the reduction of hardness will reduce its pressure resistance. Under pressure, the sealing ring is prone to excessive deformation, which cannot ensure good sealing.

Chemical reaction: The chemical properties of the sealing ring material become more active at high temperature, and it is easy to react chemically with substances in the surrounding environment. This chemical reaction may change the structure and performance of the material and reduce its sealing.

Changes in sealing performance
Reduced sealing performance: The combined effects of factors such as material aging, deformation, hardness reduction, and chemical reactions make the fit between the sealing ring and the sealing surface worse, and it is impossible to form an effective sealing barrier, which increases the possibility of medium leakage and significantly reduces the sealing performance.

Reduced reliability: The unstable performance of the sealing ring in a high temperature environment makes it difficult to ensure a continuous and reliable sealing effect during long-term use. There may be intermittent leakage or the leakage situation may gradually worsen over time, affecting the normal operation of the equipment.

Specific performance of sealing rings of different materials at high temperatures
Silicone sealing ring
Silicone has good thermal stability. Generally speaking, its softening temperature is above 200°C, and it can maintain elasticity and sealing performance under normal high-temperature working conditions. However, the specific value of the softening temperature of the silicone sealing ring will be affected by the formula and ingredients. Some high-quality products can remain stable at higher temperatures by optimizing the formula and process. However, long-term high-temperature heating, ultraviolet radiation, contact with chemicals, etc. will accelerate its aging and deterioration. When the temperature exceeds the extreme heat resistance temperature, it may soften, deform, or even melt.

C-type metal seal ring
C-type metal seal ring is an important sealing element commonly used in industrial equipment. Its special structural design and material selection enable it to have excellent performance in high temperature environments.

These materials usually have good high temperature resistance and are a common choice for seal rings in high temperature environments. They can maintain relatively stable physical and chemical properties at a certain degree of high temperature and maintain a good sealing effect.
