What is O-Ring Cord

O ring cord is a round rubber cord commonly used for many sealing applications. It comes in a range of metric and imperial sizes. The advantage of o ring cord is that it is purchased by the metre so it can be used to make non-standard size seals.

Benefits of O-Ring Cord

01/

They Prevent The Entry Of Foreign Contaminants.
Oil seals and O-rings are just like glue. They seal everything together such that there are no spaces left for any entry of foreign materials. The entry of these foreign materials means that there will be contamination of the fluids or worse still there be reactions with these foreign materials. With the right type of oil seal and O ring, you are assured that your fluid will not be contaminated in any way.

02/

Maintaining A Bearings Lubricity
When it comes to precision bearing, the seal and O ring must seal the areas completely to help them reduce non-lubricity. If there happens to be any non-lubricated contact from the seals or any other components, there might be a very hazardous result. There will be seal damage meaning that you will have to keep on maintaining these seals for them to last longer or replace them to get the long-lasting service you may need. A seal should be able to remove any spaces that might be in-between the parts so that all the components can resist non-lubricity.

03/

Easy To Assemble
When it comes to assembling O rings and oil seals, it will not require any extra knowledge apart from what you might already have. The steps to assembling them are straightforward. You only need to be extra careful to ensure that during this assembling process, every part is in place and also that the seals are tight such that there will be no leakages. You can as well make an enquiry from oil seal suppliers on how to assemble the seals.

04/

Can Perform In Extreme Conditions
These seals have been created to work in very extreme conditions. The way they have been manufactured gives them a competitive advantage over other seals. They are not easily interfered with. This means that you do not have to worry about what to do when if the conditions where the seals will be used will not be favourable enough. This ability makes them highly advantageous over other seals and all kinds of applications.

What are the Applications of O-Ring Cord

Automotive field

In the automotive field (cars, motorbikes and trucks) o-rings can be used for: powertrain, filter systems, brake systems, airbag systems, chassis, suspension, power steering systems, air intake systems, exhaust systems, gearboxes, injection systems, lighting systems and specific sealing solutions.

Chemical industry

In the chemical industry, FKM or FPM o-rings, also known as fluorinated elastomers that are highly resistant to ozone, synthetic liquids, mineral oils and many other chemical agents, are most commonly used. In contrast, o-rings made of silicone materials are resistant to high temperatures, while EPDM elastomers have good weather resistance.

How to Choose O-Ring Rope

Determine the o-ring material

Determine the o-ring material based on the application requirements like temperature, pressure, and media. Getting an o-ring replacement can be difficult if the material of the existing o-ring is not known. Use a rubber indicator test to determine the material.

Measure the o-ring size

O-rings are usually specified by their inner diameter, outer diameter, and cross-sectional width. At times, o-rings of standard sizes may not be suitable for specific requirements in existing systems; use custom-made o-rings in this case. Read our article on o-ring sizes for more information.

Determine the hardness

The hardness of the o-ring determines its ability to resist extrusion and deformation. Hardness is measured in a durometer and can range from 30-90. For example, an o-ring with a durometer reading of 60 is softer than 70, while 90 is stiff compared to a reading of 70.

International standards

O-rings are manufactured to conform to various international standards such as ISO, DIN, and JIS. These standards ensure that o-rings have uniform dimensions, tolerances, and material properties, making them interchangeable and compatible with different applications. A few examples of these standards specific to o-rings are ISO 3601, DIN 3771, and JIS-B2401.

Special cases

There are various o-ring types designed for specific connections or applications. For example, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) flange o-rings are designed to fit into SAE flange connections commonly used in hydraulic systems.

O-Ring Cord Materials

1

Nitrile (Buna-N): This is the most widely used o-ring material. It provides excellent resistance to petroleum products. It also offers an excellent compression set, tear, and abrasion resistance. It does not offer good resistance to ozone, sunlight, or weather unless it is specifically compounded to do so. Temperature range: -40° to +250°F.

2

Fluoroelastomer: This elastomer offers excellent mechanical and physical properties with good resistance to petroleum products, low compression set, and high-temperature resistance. Ideal for vacuum service and low gas permeability. Temperature range: -15° to +400°F.

3

Chloroprene: This elastomer is moderately resistant to petroleum and offers good ozone and weather resistance and good compression set. Excellent for sealing refrigeration fluids such as Freon®. Temperature range -65°- +250°F.

4

Silicone: This elastomer is ideal for weather and ozone resistance. It offers limited oil resistance and is not recommended for dynamic sealing applications due to poor tensile and tear strength and low abrasion resistance. Temperature range -80° - +450°F.

5

Highly Saturated Nitrile: This material offers better resistance to high temperature, superior physical properties, and improved chemical resistance over traditional nitrile compounds. It has improved resistance to ozone and sunlight and excellent resistance to compression set. Temperature range -40°- +325°F.

6

Ethylene Propylene (EPM, EPDM) (EPR): Excellent resistance to Skydrol® fluids used in commercial aircraft hydraulic systems. Recommended for hot water, steam, and phosphate ester-type hydraulic fluids. Resistance to some acids, alkalies, and ozone. Not recommended for petroleum fluids or diester lubricants. Temperature range: 65° - +300°F.

7

PTFE: This is a white thermoplastic fluoroethylene resin that offers heat resistance, low friction, dielectric strength, weatherability, toughness, no water absorption, and flexibility. Temperature range: -65°- +500°F.

Qualified sealing strips need to be inspected to ensure good weather resistance, wear resistance, and sealing performance.

What Factors To Consider When Selecting An O-Ring Cord

Material Selection
Selecting the appropriate material for your o-ring is very important and is your starting point when shopping for an o-ring.

Temperatures
The temperature the o-ring will be exposed to is an important consideration when choosing the proper o-ring for your application. Temperatures can adversely affect the performance of even the best-made o-ring. If the operating temperature is too cold, the o-ring will lose its elasticity and become more brittle, making breakage likely. On the other end of the spectrum, if an o-ring gets too hot, it can become too flexible, and degradation will occur. The importance of temperature is why you'll always see temperature ranges on our products. The ability to see the temperature ranges will help you determine if the material is best suited to your specific application.

Operating Pressure
Operating pressure is also an important consideration when you are purchasing o-rings. Typically, in a static sealing setting, a standard 70 shore hardness will usually work well. Yet, once pressure approaches the 1500+ psi range, you may need to consider a shore hardness of 80-90.

Surface Finish
Surface finish is also an important consideration. Generally speaking, the ideal surface finish for dynamic surfaces is 5 to 16 µ inch RMS. Smoother and rougher surfaces can result in increased friction and reduced life of the seal. Rougher finishes up to 64 µ inch RMS can be used in static applications.

P-Ring Cord Sealing Principle

O-Ring cord are bi-directional seals, circular in shape and cross section. O-Ring cord are generally made of an elastomeric material, but may be made of other materials such as PTFE or metal. An O-ring seals through the deformation of the seal material by installation and media pressure to close off the gap between mating components. Higher system pressures can cause deformation through the gap, known as extrusion, resulting in seal failure. Choosing a harder seal material or installing back-up rings to support the O-Ring cord may alleviate this problem.

The rubber O-Ring cord should be considered as an incompressible, viscous fluid having a very high surface tension. Whether by mechanical pressure from the surrounding geometry or by pressure transmitted through the hydraulic fluid or gas, this extremely viscous (elastomeric) fluid is forced to flow in the gland to produce zero clearance or a positive block to the flow of the media being sealed. The O-Ring cord absorbs the stack-up of tolerances of the unit and its memory maintains a sealed condition.

5 Must-Follow O-Ring Cord Maintenance Tips

Inspect O-Ring cord regularly
One of the most critical aspects of maintaining O-ring cord is routine inspection. Over time, O-ring cord can become unreliable seals that are brittle. These outdated O-rings may crack or even tear. To prevent leaks or premature failures, inspect your O-ring cord regularly, especially if they are exposed to corrosive environments, accumulated solids, harsh environmental conditions, or harsh chemicals.

Avoid using incompatible chemicals
Some chemicals can degrade or damage certain O-ring cord materials, causing performance-reducing cracks, stains, discoloration, swelling, shrinkage, or hardness changes. Be sure to select a material compatible with the chemicals used in your application and avoid using any incompatible chemicals that could damage the O-ring.

Keep O-ring cord lubricatedProper
O-ring cord lubrication can help these sealing solutions maintain flexibility and prevent friction damage. Choose a lubricant compatible with the O-ring cord material and the application in which it is used, and be sure to apply the lubricant evenly and avoid over-lubricating, which can attract dirt and debris.

Clean O-ring cord regularly
Regular cleaning of equipment and O-ring cord can help prevent contamination that could lead to premature failures or leaks. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and disinfecting your equipment and O-ring cord to maintain optimal performance.

ReplaceO-ring cord on schedule
Even with proper maintenance, O-ring cord will eventually wear out and must be replaced. Keep tabs on the manufacturer's recommended schedule for replacing O-ring cord to avoid unexpected failures or leaks.

FAQ

Q: What is an O-ring cord?

A: O-ring cords are a critical component in many industrial and mechanical systems, providing a flexible and elastic seal that helps prevent leakage and contamination. They are available in various types, sizes, and materials, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.Calculated O-ring Cord Cut Length ( ( OD + ID ) / 2 ) x Pi = length Pi=3.14159 Pi=3.14159. Input values in any two fields then press Calculate Use either millimeters or inches for input. Result should be interpreted in your input unit - mm or inch.

Q: What are O-rings for switches?

A: Amazon.com: WASD Keyboards Cherry MX Rubber ORing Keyboard ...
O-ring sound dampeners can be installed onto the keycaps to dramatically reduce the sound created from when a switch is fully depressed or "bottomed out." An O-ring will eliminate this clack by stopping the stem from going all the way down.

Q: What is the difference between O-ring and seal?

A: One key difference between these two sealing components is their application range; oil seals have higher pressure resistance compared to O rings which make them ideal for high-pressure environments like engine parts while O-rings work well for lower-pressure assemblies like valves and pipes.

Q: What is the O-ring used to prevent?

A: An O-ring seal is used to prevent the loss of a fluid or gas. The seal assembly consists of an elastomeric O-ring and a gland. An O-ring is a circular cross-section ring molded from rubber (as shown above). The gland - usually cut into metal or another rigid material - contains and supports the O-ring.

Q: Do O-rings make a difference?

A: Also, depending how soft the O-rings are, they can also absorb some of the vibration that is generated when typing fast, thus removing some of the “hollow sound” of the whole keyboard. You will feel the difference after applying the O-rings immediately. At first, the keys will feel “flatter” and you might not like it.

Q: What is the most common type of O-ring?

A: Nitrile
Nitrile - also known as NBR - is probably the most widely used elastomer in the seal industry at the time of writing. NBR o-ring kits and NBR seals are found in a staggering number of applications.

Q: What type of O-rings are best?

A: Fluorocarbon (Viton®)
Offering outstanding chemical and high-temperature resistance, fluorocarbon O-rings are among the most durable and versatile available. They are particularly valuable in aircraft engines and automotive fuel handling systems because they resist swell in high-octane and oxygenated fuels.

Q: What happens if an O-ring fails?

A: O-Ring Failure Description: The seal exhibits blisters, pits or pocks on its surface. Absorption of gas at high pressure and the subsequent rapid decrease in pressure. The absorbed gas blisters and ruptures the elastomer surface as the pressure is rapidly removed. Contributing Factors: Rapid pressure changes.

Q: Are O-rings always rubber?

A: The material from which an O-Ring is made is primarily an elastomer. For this reason, the O-Ring is also known as the rubber O-Ring or rubber rings. O-rings can also be manufactured in LSR, other thermoplastic materials, FKM (Viton O-ring) and in metal, both solid and hollow.

Q: Are thicker O-rings better?

A: The cross section of an O-ring refers to its thickness. To measure the cross section of a O-ring, you can turn it on the side and measure the O-ring's thickness. A larger cross section will typically offer greater protection against leaks.

Q: What is the strongest O-ring?

A: Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) is a high-performance 'O' ring material that offers exceptional chemical and thermal resistance. The carbon-fluorine bonds of FFKM – known to be the strongest single bond in organic chemistry – are what give FFKM its superlative chemical, thermal and oxidation resistance.

Q: How long will an O-ring last?

A: For example, a Neoprene O-Ring under a proper storage environment has a shelf-life of 15 years, but if these o-rings are subjected to UV radiations or heat when stored in the storage room, their useful life could become much less. The factors that affect the shelf-life includes: Stress & Strain. Humidity.Nitriles—especially high-concentration nitriles—resist oils and fuels, so they won't break down in the presence of these and other petroleum products. This makes them an excellent choice for use in fuel systems and machinery.

Q: How many types of O-rings are there?

A: The different types of o-rings are nitrile (buna-n), ethylene propylene rubber (EPR), fluorocarbon (viton), neoprene, polyurethane, silicone, PTFE, FFKM, ethylene propylene (EPDM), and fluorosilicone. Below is a summary of the different commonly used o-ring materials and types. What type of rubber are O-rings?
Nitrile (Buna), Neoprene, Ethylene Propylene (EPDM Rubber), Silicone, Fluorocarbon (Viton), and PTFE (Teflon) are among the most commonly used compounds for O-rings and seals.

Q: Which is better O-ring or D ring?

A: Although O-rings are the most common, they do have a lower sheet capacity. For larger projects, you may need to consider a D-ring, which is offset to the back cover and can may using the binder easier to manage while reducing stress on individual pages. The size of an O-ring can be determined by measuring the diameters and the width of the cross-section. The measurement you will need to include are the internal diameter (ID), outside diameter (OD), and the cross-section width (CS).

Q: Can O-rings be flat?

A: Because they have corners, flat O-rings can be used in addition to round O-rings to seal off spaces where the former cannot. For instance, as flat O-rings have a bigger surface area and offer better coverage when screwed, they can be employed as a seal between an automobile's oil filter and oil housing.

Q: Why do O-rings stretch?

A: A basic design principle often used as the starting point for O-ring grooves is stretch. One of the reasons elastomers are ideal materials for O-rings is because their elastic properties allow the O-ring to stretch around hardware and return to the original shape while within the material's elastic deformation range.Although the O-ring was originally so named because of its circular cross section, there are now variations in cross-section design. The shape can have different profiles, such as an x-shaped profile, commonly called the X-ring, Q-ring, or by the trademarked name Quad Ring.

Q: How do you know if an O-ring is bad?

A: The O-Ring develops ragged edges which appear tattered, typically due to excessive clearances. The O-Ring may exhibit radial cracks located on the highest temperature surfaces. In addition, certain elastomers may exhibit signs of softening. This is due to exposure to excessive heat.Since it is possible to stretch the O-ring diameter by up to 5% and compress it by up to 3%, you can choose an alternative size: 305 x 5 mm (with only 1% stretch), or 310 x 5 mm (with only 0.6% compression).

Q: Are silicone O-rings better?

A: Silicone is renowned for having one of the widest working temperature ranges of any elastomer, as well as excellent flexibility and low compression set characteristics. Silicone 'O' rings can also be compounded to be flame retardant, electrically resistant and conductive. Moreover, the HNBR seals shrink during aging due to the dominant crosslinking reactions. On O-rings that had aged in the uncompressed state, the shrinkage was about 2% after 184 d at 150 °C and about 1.5% after 365 d at 125 °C.

Q: Should O-rings be hard?

A: The hardness of rubber o-ring compounds are measured by the Shore A durometer; the higher the durometer, the harder the compound. 70-durometer hardness should be used whenever possible as it offers the best combination of properties for most o-ring applications.

Q: How flexible are O-rings?

A: O-Ring Characteristics
As they are made of flexible rubber material, these accessories are highly versatile and has the capacity to deform themselves so as to suit any shape found in the cavity that is near the clearance gap.It depends on what effect you are trying to achieve. If you want to quiet down the keyboard and soften the landing, get soft o-rings, ie in 40A or 50A durometer.Pulses of high pressure can cause the clearance gap between the mating edges to open and close. This can lead to the O-ring becoming trapped between the sharp edges of the mating surfaces, resulting in physical damage to the seal surface often referred to as nibbling.
